Potential for Renewable Energy Resources in Strategic Planning of Tinaztepe Campus

The increasing demand for energy, with the addition of issues like global warming, emphasize the use of renewable energy sources (RES) as a priority, especially in countries like Turkey, where there is lots of RES potential. However, while the studies made on these topics rapidly increase in number, the use of RES are not very widespread [1] [2] [3] [4]. On the one hand the public wants to use these abundant and clean energy resources, yet on the other hand they either do not have the knowhow or do not want to be the first ones to experience the unsolved issues that come with using a new technology. Therefore forming public consciousness becomes a very important aspect in the implementation of RES projects. Within this framework, this paper proposes to utilize RES to make the Tinaztepe Campus of Dokuz Eylul University more energy conscious. The Tinaztepe Campus is located in the Buca district of Izmir, Turkey. It occupies 450 hectare area and contains 22000 people. For strategic planning of a region in this scale, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis tool is used. A SWOT analysis of the campus in terms of energy is made and a project, where RES would be used as a significant energy source, is proposed. As a result of the SWOT analysis, the campus was found suitable for energy generation from wind, solar and biomass resources. In this paper, areas suitable for energy generation are determined on a schematic illustration of the campus. In addition, the energy generation that can be achieved by the use of suggested planning is estimated.
