Counterfeit Component Detection at Raytheon: Techniques, Examples and Statistical Results

The risks associated with counterfeit electronic components in the worldwide supply chain have been oftenrndiscussed and are relatively well known to the electronic parts community. Counterfeit parts can enter the supplyrnchain from several sources. Brokers and non-franchised distributors (NFD) have been shown to have the highestrnincidence of counterfeit product. Counterfeit electronic components create liability in that they can result inrnmalfunction or failure of electronic assemblies. To mitigate the reliability risks posed by counterfeits, much of thernrecent efforts made by the stakeholders in the industry have been spent on discerning which analytical tools andrntechniques are "best" in regard to both feasibility and cost for counterfeit product detection. This task, of course, is arnmoving target since the ability of counterfeiters to produce good fakes will improve as the ability of users to detectrncounterfeits improves. This paper will review Raytheon SAS's historical data associated with counterfeit product,rnbreak down the data as to which analytical techniques best revealed evidence to support the counterfeit finding, andrnshare several case studies.
