This paper describes the preliminary results and current status of an instrumentation system being developedrnat Sandia National Laboratories and funded by the DOE National Transportation Program. This telemetry system uses nonintrusiverninstrumentation and electromagnetic coupling to supply system power to internal solid-state sensors and to retrieverndata from within the walls of a 9975 transportation package. This system can be adapted for use in the SAFKEG or otherrntransportation packages. The prototype system, which was recently successfully demonstrated, includes seven data channels,rnthree for sensors and four for state-of-health channels. This system is being developed primarily in order to transport 30% torn80% pure Pu oxides and residues, or other gas-generating nuclear materials, from multiple sites, e.g., Los Alamos, Hanford,rnpossibly Rocky Flats, to the Savannah River Site for disposition purposes. This Nuclear Materials Transportation ContainerrnPrototype Telemetry System, specifically targeted for application in sealed 9975 packages, is intended to optimize systemrncapabilities to measure hydrogen concentration, gas pressure, internal temperature, and to provide a unique electronicrnidentification signature. These functions are all to be monitored periodically by the telemetry system in a non-intrusivernmanner.
