SPENT FUEL TRANSPORT AND STORAGE CASKS UNDER EXTREME ACCIDENTS

In Germany the transport safety of high level radioactive material is permanently discussed in public. FollowingrnSeptember 11, 2001, a study was conducted by GRS and BAM to compile and analyze available knowledge concerningrnthe behavior of transport and storage casks under extreme mechanical and thermal loads that exceed the design requirements.rnThe reported tests and calculations demonstrate the wide safety margins of monolithic cast iron transport and storagerncasks. Even a deliberate crash of an aircraft onto a cask during a transport operation or onto an interim storage facilityrnwould cause neither any mechanical nor any thermal loads that would effect a considerable radioactive release.
