In any rapid prototypin process, the layer by layer building process of deposition of material introduces an error on the amount of material used compared to the volume specified by the CAD model. This affects the dimensional accurace as well as surface finish for different part build orientations. This paper describes a methodology to compute the volumetric error develooped in selected primitives for any orientation of parts built on the fused deposition modelling rapid prototyping system. The techniue can be applied to determine the best orientation ofthe part based on the minimum volumetric error. The results are compared with the experimental measurements of the volumetric errors on the parts built at different orientations.
