THE INFLUENCE OF LAMOTRIGINE ON AMINO ACID NEUROTRANSMITTERS LEVEL IN THE PTZ-INDUCED STATUS EPILEPTICUS RAT HIPPOCAMPUS

In the present study, we have mostly investigated the effect of glutamate (Glu), aspartate (Asp), glycine (Gly) treatment by LTG in pentylenetetrazol(PTZ)induced status epilepticus(SE) under normal and pathological condition in conscious, freely-moving rats hippocampus using microdialysis. The results showed that glutamate release were significantly increased during the seizure/interical periods, and markedly decreased after the application of 20 mg/kg LTG. In contrast, Aspartate release was significantly increased during the seizure period as well as decreased during the interical periods, and no significant difference after the application of 20 mg/kg LTG. LTG reduced pentylenetetrazol-induced status epilepticus two amino acids studied, although this was most marked in the case of Glu. This effect of the drug was proportionally much greater in the case of Glu than Asp studied. Gly were no significant difference during the seizure/interical periods and after the application of 20 mg/kg LTG. The results indicate that the modulation of LTG on the Glu neurotransmitters certainly plays one of important roles on antiepilepsy efficacy in the pentylenetetrazol-evoked acute epileptogenesis modeL
