The Viking system is a full capability gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system built on the proven Agilent Mass Selective Detector (MSD) hardware. In addition to a conventional GC/MS platform, a highly flexible sample input pathway is provided. Gas sample can be drawn directly by an integral sample pump across a membrane interface of the MS for quick identification of volatile compounds in the air (Membrane Inlet MS). For complex sample mixture at low concentration, the gas can be collected off-line on a sorbent trap and inserted into the programmable trap inlet. The removable trap can be heated rapidly and sample components are transferred onto a built-in fixed sorbent trap, which in turn heats up to desorb into the GC. The mixture is separated by a capillary GC column prior to MS detection, thus improving the sensitivity and quality of analysis. Gas samples from a remote inlet can also be drawn in directly and concentrated on the internal fixed trap, thus providing a self-containing gas analytical system. There is also a conventional heated injection inlet for liquid injection and Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME). In summary, the Viking is a compact, transportable GC/MS system with well proven MS hardware components that functions equally well in the lab as well as in the field, In this work, the various operating parameters and sampling modes are investigated. The versatility of the sample inlets are illustrated with several representative toxic industrial chemicals or compounds of environmental interest.
