Investigation of Fish Resources in Xiangxi River and the Protect Strategy

Xiangxi River is the biggest distribute of the Three Gorges Reservoir in Hubei Province. We investigated the fish resources of 5 sampling site from the upstream to the estuary during May to June in 2010. It was found that there were 34 fish species belonging to 4 Order, 7 family and 30 genera. Comparing to the history record in 1990 which had 39 fish species, there were 19 species of this investigation were same to the history record, and there were 17 species were new record, most of which were fit to the lentic habitat, but there were 20 species of the history record were inexistent in our investigation, most of which were fit to the flowing habitat. The variation of fish composition might be resulted from two reasons; ? there were a lot of small hydropower stations on the Xiangxi River which destroyed the flowing habitat and the river connectivity, (2) The backwater area of Xiangxi River in Three Gorges Reservoir could reach to Zhaojun Town in the midstream, which formed an extensive lentic habitat for the lentic fish species. It was also found that there was a big population of Neosalanx taihuensis in the backwater area of Xiangxi River, which might be a threat to other fish species and a risk of water blooms. In order to protect fish resources and hydroecology of Xiangxi River, we gave the suggestions as follows; ①protect environment and reduce the nutrients to the water body, ② dismantle the small hydropower stations which had low efficiency but big influence to the river connectivity,③strengthen the management of fishery, prohibit the unlawful fishing and control the fishing effort,④ monitor the population dynamics of N. taihuensis and control the amount to keep the balance of ecosystem.
