Taxonomy and Biogeography of the Family Magnoliaceae from Vietnam

This paper deals mainly with preliminary taxonomy and phytogeography of the family Magnoliaceae in Vietnam, one of the most diverse countries in Indochina. Based mainly on literature survey, herbarium specimens examination from most of the northern and southern herbaria, and collections from recent field trips, a checklist of Magnoliaceae of Vietnam and their short discussion on geographic distribution are given. A preliminary checklist is constructed as following format: synonyms, vernacular name (Vern.), habitat (Hab.), distribution (Dist.), uses, and notes for each species. At least 53 Magnoliaceae's species, belonging to 12 genera: Alcimandra, Houpoea, Kmeria, Lirianthe, Liriodendron, Magnolia, Manglietia, Michelia, Pachylamax, Parakmeria, Talauma, and Yulania are currently recorded for Vietnam. According to the existing distribution, it can be classified into eight types of ecological distribution in Vietnam: north-west, north-east, Red River Delta, central-north, coastal central-south, highland, south-east, and Mekong River Delta. According to phytographical regions (Averyanov et al. 2003), it is divided into 6 units: Sikang-Yunnan, South China, North Indochina, Central Annam, South Annam, and South Indochina.
