The reactivity of carbons in oxidizing environments is dependent on both the chemistry(e.g.,the presence of catalytic impurities) and the microstructure (e.g., porosity).In some instances,for example carbon brake linings for aircraft or blast furnace cokes, high reactivity is a disadvantage.The coke in the blast furnace functions as a structural material within the burden and its early loss of strength,due to reaction at a point too high in the stack,is detrimental.Blast furnace operators have long used standard laboratory tests("coke reactivity index" and "coke strength after reaction") in selecting their cokes.
