PRECISION AGRICULTURE FOR BETTER AGRONOMY, FARM OPERATIONS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

The structure of agriculture has changed the last few decades. One way of tracking the change is to look at the value chain. The agricultural value chain traditionally has been portrayed as a linear series of steps, starting with the producers of supply to farmers, the distributors who sell these goods to farmers, mostly “family farms”, who in turn sell what they produce to intermediaries who then pass it on to transformers. This view of the agricultural value chain puts the farmer in the center. It also makes sense in local situations, like the village or the region. It tends to be production volume oriented, and logistics driven. This view is easy to understand and based on tangible facts. This simplicity makes this view hard to dislodge. Several world-class companies still base the communications around their strategy on this somewhat dated image of the agricultural value chain.
