Diagnosis and Control of Bacterial Fish Pathogens with Emphasis on Vibrio harveyi

With the increasing significance of V. harveyi as a serious constraint of aquacultural production, worldwide, it is surprising that comparatively little has been done to devise effective diagnostic and control strategies. Certainly, the benefit of serological procedures, notably ELISA, have been demonstrated for the rapid detection of V. harveyi in diseased animals. Yet, disease control methods seem generally inadequate. Clearly, more emphasis should be placed on developing effective probiotics, which will have a role for both fish and penaeids. Vaccines, which are more suited for use with fish, are not yet available. Problems of removing toxic components while retaining antigenicity need to be overcome.
