Fast and efficient motion estimation is crucial to reduce therncomplexity of video encoder and improve the compressionrnefficiency. It is the most expensive component in terms ofrnmemory and computational load. In this paper a newrnbidirectional motion estimation algorithm based on 3Drnrecursive-search algorithm is proposed which effectivelyrnminimizes the number of candidate motion vectors in thernprediction set. The algorithm is extremely computationallyrnlight compared to full search and other existing fastrnapproaches. The average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratiorn(PSNR) performance and compression efficiency is virtuallyrnnot compromised. Results based on a number of videornsequences and on different Group of Pictures (GOP)rnstructures are presented to clearly demonstrate the benefitsrnof the proposed motion estimation technique.
