A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE OF CULTURAL ARTIFACT IN VIRTUAL REALITY AND AUGMENTED REALITY

This paper is a preliminary investigation of the virtualrnexperience of interacting with a three-dimensionalrnartifact, the oriental paper parasol, in virtual reality andrnaugmented reality environments. Through experimentsrndesigned to explore different aspects of virtualrnexperience, this study measures the attitude toward thernoriental paper parasol, which can be viewed as therntradition of craftsmanship from the past or as an umbrellarnstill can be used today. The findings show thatrnparticipants who experienced the paper parasol in thernvirtual reality environment tended to think the paperrnparasol represents craftsmanship from the past.rnParticipants who experienced the paper parasol in thernaugmented reality environment tended to think the paperrnparasol is an umbrella. The findings are discussed withrnrespect to their implication for how further developmentrnof technology may mediate thoughts on the culturalrnmeaning of the artifact.
