A series of tests was carried out to visualize the stresses and strains thatrnoccur during penetration of a foundation element into a granularrnmedium. Since there is no unique relationship between stress and strainrnin granular material, information about stress-strain behaviour can bernobtained only by independent measurement of the stresses and strainsrnin the interior of a sample. Currently, only optical techniques, based onrnthe photoelastic properties of transparent granular material, arernavailable for acquiring field information on stresses and strains. In thisrnstudy the optical technique has been used to digitize the stressrndistribution in plane strain models with non-cohesive granular materialrnduring penetration of a pile and penetration and sliding of a spudcanrnfoundation.
