We present the activity carried out in the framework ofrnthe ESA GSP study called "Feasibility Investigation ofrnGlobal Ocean Surface Current Mapping using ERS,rnMetOp and QuikScat Wind Scatterometer”rn(DOPSCAT). The study was aimed at assessing thernpotential of scatterometer instruments for sea surfacerncurrent vector retrieval under the strong requirements ofrnpreserving both the swath and the surface wind vectorrnestimation performances offered by the existingrnscatterometers. The paper describes the main resultsrnobtained during the DOPSCAT study and providesrnsome recommendations for this new instrument concept.
