摘要

Addressing the issues of climate change, the EuropeanrnSpace Agency has recently initiated the GlobalrnMonitoring of an Essential Climate Variables programrn(ESA Climate Change Initiative). The main objective isrnto realize the full potential of the long-term globalrnEarth Observation archives that ESA has establishedrnover the last thirty years. Due to well organized datarnaccess and transparency for the data quality, as well asrnlong-term scientific and technical support, the providedrndatasets have become very attractive for the use inrnEarth System Modeling. The Max Plank Institute forrnMeteorology is contributing to the ESA CCI via thernClimate Modeler User Group (CMUG) activities and isrnresponsible for providing a modeler perspective on thernLand Cover and Fire Essential Climate Variables.rnThe new ESA land cover ECV has recently released arnnew global 300-m land cover dataset. This dataset isrnsupported by an interactive tool which allows flexiblernhorizontal re-scaling and conversion from currentlyrnaccepted satellite specific land classes to the modelspecificrnPlant Functional Types (PFT) categorization.rnSuch a dataset is an ideal starting point for therngeneration of the land cover information for therninitialization of model cover fractions. In thisrnpresentation, we show how the usage of this newrndataset affects the model performance, comparing it tornthe standard model set-up, in terms of energy and waterrnfluxes. To do so, we performed a number of offlinernland-system simulations with original standardrnJSBACH land cover information and with the newrnESA CCI land cover product. We have analyzed thernimpact of land cover on a simulated surface albedo, rntemperature and energy fluxes as well as on thernbiomass load and fire carbon emissions.
