The MACC project is implementing atmospheric monitoringrnand forecasting services for the global and Europeanrndomains as part of the GMES programme. Smokernplumes are monitored by assimilating observations ofrnaerosol optical depth and various trace gases. Biomassrnburning is monitored in real time by assimilating observationsrnof fire radiative power (FRP) from five satellitebasedrninstruments. The global monitoring capability isrndemonstrated with a near real time fire and smoke analysisrnfor South America, where a threefold increase ofrnbiomass burning has been detected in 2010 compared torn2009. Furthermore, an anomalously flat diurnal cycle hasrnbeen recorded for the Russian wildfires of July and Augustrn2010. This can be interpreted as a characteristic ofrnpeaty soil burning, which entails particularly large emissions.rnThe global aerosol service was able to forecast,rnwith three days lead time, an air quality threshold transgressionrnin Finland that resulted from the Russian fires.
