First series applications with LED inrnautomotive front lighting functions are on thernroad or close to production release. Sidernmarkers and Position lamps, DaytimernRunning lamps and Turn Indicators arernconsidered to be in a technology readyrnstatus. The technological aspects will berndiscussed like thermal solutions, opticalrnsolutions and lighting performance. Reasonsrnfor the rather slow introduction into new carrnmodels are discussed.rnBut, speaking in terms of technologyrnchallenge, the utmost efforts in the recentrnyears had been assigned to LED Low andrnHigh Beam functions. Optical solutions willrnbe discussed, also the concepts to follow therndevelopment roadmap of the LED suppliersrnin terms of luminous flux, packaging andrnluminance. Due to the fact that headlampsrnare considered as extremely design relevantrnthe additional challenge will be discussed tornfind a design approach interesting enough tornimplement the sophisticated LEDrntechnology.
