Modem, Message-Based operating systems with GraphicrnUser Interfaces have spurred tremendous advances inrnsoftware development. Usability, connectivity, andrntransparency of software has increased, as has therntransferability of the skills learned in one application tornanother.rnBuilding Simulation software developers have amplernopportunity to profit from the advanced technology that isrnnow available, such as sophisticated edit controls, helpfulrnconcepts such as Cue Help and Wizards, and the powerfulrnmodularizations made possible by Dynamic Link Libraries.rnA number of these concepts are discussed in detail andrnapplications to building energy simulation are presented. Tornembrace these applications will require a change on the partrnof building simulation software developers away fromrnvertical integration (developing HVAC calculations and allrndata 1/0 aspects), toward opportunistic integration ofrncommercially available modules for all data 1/0 to better bernable to focus on the issues pertaining to HVAC.
