Laboratory experiments were performed to identify the products of the ozonolysis of benzo[a]anthracene. Gas chromatography followed by mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to separate and identify these products. The ozonolysis of benzo[a]anthracene was evaluated using two different ozone dosages. Approximately, fiftenn major products were generated during ozonation at the two dosages. Due to properties and structures of the products, gas chromatography alone was unsuccessful for their separation. Prior to GC/MS analysis, a preliminary separation step was required. A reverse phae medium pressure column followed by thin layer chormatography (TLC) provided the separation necessary to continue with the GC/MS analysis. At least ten products have been identified using this process. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used to confirm the structures identified by GC/MS.
