Delamination Propagation Behavior and the Fracture Toughness of Composite Laminates under Shear Fracture Mode

Fracture morphology of interfaces of composite laminates under shear fracture mode and its effect on fracture resistance were experimentally studied during stable damage propagation. A concentrated load was applied at the center of an elliptical embedded delamination in cross-ply Carbon/Epoxy composite laminates, where the delamination stably grew without the influence of free edge. Energy release rate was numerically calculated for measured shapes of delaminations by using a finite element method. This method enables us to investigate the dependence of fracture toughness on the fiber direction with respect to the crack propagation and crack migration effect into the lamina (that is, to the other interface) under shear mode fracture.
