Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/organically modified layered silicates (OLS orrnorganoclay) nanocomposites were prepared by a simple emulsion polymerization with differentrnOLS filling. Three quaternary ammonium surfactants and five quaternary phosphoniumrnsurfactants were used to prepare the OLS. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electronrnmicroscopy (TEM) were used to quantify the clay dispersion within the polymer matrix. Therneffects of the surfactants on the glass transition temperatures (T_g) of the clay/organic complexesrnwere examined by DSC.
