System-oriented knowledge for the analytical diagnosis of system faults is organized into a hierarchy of five levels: physical, logical, functional, conceptual, and objective. An experiment was conducted to examine the mastering, utilization and evaluation of the five levels of knowledge by a group of experts in system fault diagnosis. The experimental results indicate that the logical, functional, and conceptual levels of knowledge are more important to fault diagnosis than the physical and objective levels of knowledge. The implications of the results in the interface design of a decision support system to system fault diagnosis are presented.
