Described in this paper is the test series focused on establishing the characteristics of commercially produced manganin gauges subjected to sustained contact loading. Knowledge of gauge properties under this type of loading is necessary for the development of a unique force transducer.rnTests involving normal loading identified surface texture of the contact tooling as a significant factor affecting gauge response and behavior. A smooth surface is conducive to repeatable, predictable response while a rougher surface causes undesirable gauge behavior. Smooth contact tooling also identifies the hysteresis characteristics of the gauge. A shear load applied in the presence of a normal load causes gauge response to drop. At most this effect is approximately 3% of the gauge output. The effect varies with normal load, shear load, and the direction of the shear relative to the grid.
