This work explores the use of the shape annealing method for the design of structures, road layouts, and manufacturing process plans. Shape annealing can be used to solve any problem that can be modeled as a network flow problem. Shape annealing combines shape grammars and simulated annealing to laterally explore the solution space and converge on optimally directed designs. An interactive shape grammar interpreter enables the rapid implementation of limited languages of shape to represent design knowledge.
