Conduction current and space charge formation in XLPE insulation

In this paper, results of conduction and charge accumulation measurements conducted on cable-grade XLPE with aluminium and gold cathodes have been presented. The controlling conduction mechanism has been identified to be Schottky injection. Space charge measurements revealed an accumulation of negative charge injected from the cathode and a correlation between the conduction current and the total accumulated charge have been established.
