Fermented beer is traditionally clarified through diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration which is technically reliable and effective. However the conventioanl proces sis unable to cope with high soilds contents. so cold conditioning for bulk solids settlement is required before the filtration. handling of the fine powder DE material also poses a health hazard. More significantly the DE filtration process is meeting an environmental challenge of how to dispose the ued diatomaceous materials as landfill regulation is tightening and cost going up. Regeneration of the materials as an option has been investigaed and considered at present an economically nonviable solution.
