Large combined-cycle plants using natural gas emerged as the outstanding trend in electricity production in the 1990s. Pacemaker for this development was modern gas turbine technology. Over 40 % of all new plants involved this technology. High efficiency and reliability, low emissions, high operating and fuel flexibility at low investment, together with short construction times, provide extremely attractive features to the customer.rnIn response to these market needs, Siemens developed an innovative stationary gas turbine family based on advanced design and technology features. The model SGT5-4000F (initially named V94.3A, at 265 MW) was the 50Hz machine, (whereas SGT6-4000F is the 60 Hz version/180 MW and SGT-1000F a dual 50/60 Hz model/60 MW).rnThe guiding principle in this development was to stay with an evolutionary process, that was to use proven technology as the basis, while improving to the utmost good features in cooling technology, blade technology and combustion technology.rnFirst commercially introduced at the Didcot Power Station, England in 1996, the SGT5-4000F has become since the very successful workhorse in power production and matching customer requirements. The advanced family has over 150 gas turbines in operation, with over 60 units on order.rnAt present, over 4,200,000 EOH have been clocked up (March 2007). 12-months-average reliability values between 99.3 and 99.7 show world class reliability levels. The gas turbine efficiency has evolved to 38.6 % and to over 58 % for plant efficiency, record value demonstrated at the Mainz-Wiesbaden Combined Cycle plant, Germany.rnIn this paper market-driven design and evolution of gas turbine philosophy and corresponding optimizing plant arrangements are discussed. Ten years of operating experience of the advanced SGT5-4000F gas turbine fleet are reviewed and presented.
