High density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline systems have been growing in use sincernits birth in the early 1950’s. This confidence has increased in the decades of the 70’s,rn80’s, and 90’s; such that newer and more extensive uses of HDPE in trenchlessrnapplications is now common for vital underground utilities. With AWWA approvalsrnand standards providing still more confidence in polyethylene plastic usage, we nowrnobserve this industry working with trenchless methods and moving into other areas ofrnutility reconstruction needs. Included in these newer and innovative uses, arerntrenchless installations of HDPE water mains; resulting in significant advantages overrntraditional pipe materials and excavation installations.rnThis is the story of one project in a busy Midwest community. It will illustrate notrnonly the physical features that improved construction; but also to tell the “benefitsrnstory” of the neighborhood residents and the city’s bottom line political and financialrngains. Taking the time to do it right can potentially match a newer technologyrn(trenchless HDPE) with old fashion common sense and unexpected benefits.
