Metallic gaskets are most commonly used to achieve fluid and/or gas seal in flowlines, injection lines an high-pressure pipelines. THese gaskets are most commonly ring type joints, which seal by undergoing some plastic deformation in concentric grooves machined into the opposing flange faces. Plain metallic gasket styles offer very little useful recovery and as a result are sensitive to flange movemnets resulting fro mextreme operating conditions or extermal bendign moments. The are also vulnerable to corrosion, which can lead to leak paths. High-pressure systems are aggressive environments and will readily attack even the most minor of leak paths.
