While the overall Japanese economy has upturned in year 2006, the Japanese packaging industry has reached a big turning point. In spite of six-stepwise increase in the price for raw materials during the past two years, the packaging industry has not been able to pass its additional cost to the end-users, particularly in the foods and beverage segments, because of a continuing deflation and hard competition between retailers. This means that even though suppliers raised prices, their customers who are converters could not in turn respond with increases of their own prices. The retail price of foods and beverages remains flat without any bright sign of disengagement from deflation.
