Abstract: The paper presents the results of the development of tunable diode laser based (TDL) spectroscopy methods for the purpose of atmosphere monitoring. This work was started in 1979, when the successful experiments on the measuring of carbon monoxide concentration in the open atmosphere were handled by a joint team of the General Physics Institute of the Academy of Science of the USSR and the Central Aerological Laboratory (Moscow). This work has been performed using the methodological background developed in the General Physics Institute in 1977 - 1980 and diode lasers developed and manufactured in Lebedev Physical Institute. Those experiments showed on the one hand bright perspectives in using diode laser based systems of the middle IR region (4 - 9 micrometers) in the atmosphere pollution concentration measurements, and on the other hand a number of problems that should be solved before these systems may be used in atmosphere monitoring. We discuss those problems and our approach for dealing with them. !4
