Abstract: Conventionally, particle image velocimetry techniquesutilize a laser light sheet oriented perpendicular tothe viewing direction to illuminate tracer particles.In this SPIE proceedings paper, initial results arepresented based upon illuminating the region ofinterest with partially coherent light from behind theparticle and viewing the forward scattered diffractionpattern using video microscopy with a CCD array. Thereare several distinct advantages to this arrangement,including: easily identified particle centroids and thepossibility of simultaneously obtaining the fluidvelocity in different planes perpendicular to theviewing direction without moving the imaging system orillumination source. This technique will be referred toas Coherent Forward Scattering Particle ImageVelocimetry.!11
