A Comparison of Cambrian Reservoir Rocks Onlapping the S. E. and N.W. Sides of the Algonquin Arch in SW Ontario. A Regional Correlation Project

For more than half a Century geologists have been puzzled as to why the Cambrian sediments bordering the Appalachian Basin, onlapping the south-eastern side of the Algonquin Arch in onshore Ontario contain several large commercial hydrocarbon accumulations, and many oil and gas shows, while those same rocks bordering the Michigan Basin side of the Arch have virtually no shows and no commercial fields. Recent detailed work by the author has produced what he believes is a reasonable explanation for this conundrum. This paper will present his thesis, which has been derived from a grid of detailed, interlocking, regional, cross sections covering all of south-western Ontario. These sections will allow the reader to perform intra-Cambrian stratigraphic correlations all of south-western Ontario, both offshore and onshore, and their use has standardized the Formation names for the Cambrian over that entire region. It is the conclusion of the author, that all of the Cambrian Formations that are present in the eastern part of the State of Michigan are also present in southwestern Ontario, and that the Michigan Basin Formation terminology can also be applied to the Ontario sediments as well.
