In-stream tidal power turbines are becoming increasingly popular. In order to develop, test and realise tidal power stations that utilise strong ocean currents, test sites with suitable velocities and facilitated infrastructure should be developed. Finding new test sites for in-stream tidal current turbines is therefore an area of ongoing research. A combination of tides and river discharges causes relatively strong and periodic currents in a narrow sound at a site in Southern Norway. Observations and a high-resolution fjord model covering this area of interest are assessed in order to determine the flow pattern in the area and the feasibility of testing and development of in-stream turbines.
