Over the past 10 years, the cost of DNA sequencing has decreased by several orders of magnitude (Figure 1). This has had many impacts in our culture, such as the advent of "take home" genetic testing kits such as 23 and me. Within the Water Resource Recovery field, the decrease in the cost of DNA sequencing tools has led to a focus on determining how to best apply the various molecular tools available for understanding microbial ecology. While a sound understanding of where and when to use different DNA tools in common in academia, thoroughly documented case studies of how to effectively apply DNA sequencing tools for operations are not currently readily available. This presentation will provide case studies on how to combine commercially available sequencing techniques with more targeted sequencing to understand ecology shifts and provide guidance for operation and design.
