Box jacking in Boston

摘要

The $10.8 billion Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston, Massachusetts is currently the largest infrastructure project in the United States. The purpose of the project is to replace Boston's aging, elevated central highway system with a modern, underground expressway with increased traffic capacity. A major element of the project is the rebuilding of the South Bay Interchange for Interstates I-90 and I-93, and includes the extension of the existing I-90 route under the track system leading into Boston's South Station Railway Terminal. This paper will discuss design and construction aspects of the I-90 highway tunnel sections being built under the South Station tracks using tunnel jacking and ground freezing techniques.
