Fuel Transfer Pipeline HDD - Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia

A 10-inch, carbon steel pipeline from a refinery to a user facility at a nearby airport required identification of a suitablerntrenchless method to cross the Brisbane River. HDD was selected, as traditional trenching and other trenchlessrnmethods were deemed not feasible or undesirable. The HDD length is approximately 4,000 feet, and installs a steelrnpipe with an external coating system using three layers of polyethylene. URS prepared an engineered HDD design forrnthe project, which included the following tasks:rn1. Reviewing siting data topographic survey, right-of-way, mapping, geotechnical data, geologic data,rnengineering design documents, drawings (utilities, road, right of way requirements and other plans).rn2. Evaluating HDD risks, including potential geologic hazards, basic features of alignment, profile, entry/exitrnpit considerations, adjacent structures and utilities, staging and deployment, and feasibility of the installationrnfor both rock and overburden borepaths.rn3. Calculation of pullback load, pipe stresses, and borehole stability.rnURS developed a preliminary HDD design and recommendations addressing anticipated ground conditions, potentialrnsurface settlement and ground heave, and minimum ground cover requirements to limit potential for inadvertentrnreturns to the river ecosystem.
