In the fall of 2012, a section of the steel pipe (the outfall section) for the Wentworth storm sewerrnbroke off and sank to the bottom of the shipping berth in Pier 14 in the City of Hamilton. A ship inadvertently gotrnstuck on this 2,700 mm diameter broken piece of pipe, forcing an emergency dredging operation. After the pipe wasrnremoved, a series of inspections took place to confirm the condition of the steel outfall pipe, including underwaterrnvisual dive inspection and dual-axis sonar inspection. A remote operating vehicle (ROV) inspection of the internalrnpipe may be another inspection option. Due to the fact that this is a fully submerged storm sewer, standardrninspection technologies (i.e., CCTV and sonar) would not work. This paper will discuss in detail how the City ofrnHamilton and R.V. Anderson Associates Limited developed the inspection program, carried out each inspection andrnevaluated available repair and possible renewal options for the large diameter submerged storm outfall.
