HCI in Health Care: Meeting the decision support needs of the clinical care team, including patients

Success in achieving high quality health outcomes now relies on the concerted effort of health professionals and patients, the consumers of health care, working together in an integrated fashion to promote health and manage illnesses. Consumer Health Informatics refers to the application of computer technology to support patisnts as they learn about health problems and make decisions regarding the management .of their own health challenges. We explore current trends in the design and delivery of health information directly to consumers. We then propose 'a new, community-centered model of consumer health informatics that attends to the devices, content, and delivery systems needed to insure that patients have adequate support for full participation in health promotion and disease management activities within the health care system.
