SUCCESSFUL CHALLENGES DURING THE DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF INNOVATIVE PROCESSES FOR THE BIOREMEDIATION OF SOILS

In summary the processes presented have been developed and applied for the full-scale treatment of explosive contaminated soils and soils contaminated with other recalcitrant compounds. The developers themselves identified the challenges faced and overcome during the development and application of these technologies. Categories of barriers identified by EPA (2000) which included 1. institutional ― barriers imposed by entities that regulate, develop or select innovative treatment technologies for use 2. regulatory and legislative ― barriers imposed by government agencies 3. technical ― barriers associated with lack of cost and performance data 4. economic and financial ― barriers that reduced or eliminated financial incentives were compared to the challenges identified by the technology developers (Table 1). The institutional barrier appeared to be the greatest challenge. The regulatory barriers were site-specific as the developers performed site-specific demonstrations. The technical barrier was seen by the fungal technology developers as a key challenge during process development. Much of the funding for the technologies presented here was internal, therefore, the economic barrier was not frequently mentioned. A summary of the comments is provided.
