FLOOD CONTROL MANAGEMENT WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO EMERGENCY RESERVOIRS

The flood control system of the Koeroes rivers consists of four elements: main dykes, local dykes, emergency reservoirs and circle dykes of settlements. The heart of the flood control system are main dykes serving direct protection functions during every flood. Local dykes serve as backups and control the extent of inundation when the main dykes are breached. Circle dykes protect settlements built in the inundation area on flood plains. Emergency reservoirs or detention basins are facilities, which are suitable for temporary storage of flood water. They are activated only in extreme situations of threats to the main dykes to avert greater damages and flood disasters.
