We have found that when a dairy cow gets mastitis, the NIR spectra of her bio-fluids and tissue change in a specific way. Multivariate analysis of NIR spectral data allowed extraction of useful information from milk, urine, blood and tissue spectra connected with mastitis. Cow's mastitis diagnosis based on SIMCA classification of near-infrared spectra of biological fluids showed similar performance for milk, blood, and urine when the somatic cell count (SCC) in milk was used to indicate the disease threshold. The success of NIRS in mastitis diagnostics was defined by the sensitive spectroscopic response to the compositional changes of biological fluids as a result of mastitis. Presented results opened a new approach for noninvasive health monitoring based on NIR spectral data acquisition and analysis.
