THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERNAL CORROSION CONTROL IN PIPELINE INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT

As part of a complete pipeline integrity program, mitigation and control of internal corrosion is akey though often overlooked component. The removal of deposits and liquid holdup from a pipeline isimportant in both integrity management and for optimizing the efficiency of operation. A set of fieldstudies are included to demonstrate the benefits. Flow prediction and modeling is critical in determiningwhich lines contain solid deposits and liquid hold-up. In addition, options for removing solids fromunpiggable sections of pipeline are illustrated with a case history. Finally, the basic components in acomplete internal corrosion mitigation program are described with particular emphasis on usingchemical inhibitors.
