This study concerns the fate of NP as a model compound in soil-grass systems amended with three various sludges prepared by using different dewatering and conditioning treatments. One dewatered sludge and two conditioned (one chemically and one physically) and dewatered sludges were tested. Incubation experiments were carried out using a ~(14)C-labelled isomer of NP, which was applied to soil/sludge-grass and control systems soil/sludge without plants. The type of sludge conditioning/dewatering treatment had an effect on the further fate of NP in soil/grass systems. More metabolites than parent compounds were accumulated in both roots and leaves of grass in each treatment. The highest accumulation of NP residues was observed in grass grown on soil systems amended with dewatered sludge without conditioning pretreatment, while the final biomass of this plant was the lowest.
