This paper reviews past and current building code provisions for repairing damage tornexisting buildings. Shortfalls, ambiguities and contradictions in the code discoveredrnduring the course of designing repairs to buildings damaged during the March 2003rnblizzard in Denver, Colorado are discussed. The paper discusses the significantrnchallenges involved in providing responsible engineering services for the repair ofrndamaged structures considering current code and jurisdictional requirements andrnattempts to clarify the requirements with authoritative interpretations from codernofficials. Recommendations for improving repair provisions in the code arernpresented.
