Towards a Computer Vision and Augmented Reality Based System for FSTD Validation

In the military domain flight simulation training devices are becoming indispensable training means for the replacement of live flight training. Therefore, more rigorous validation requirements and qualification standards are developed by military aviation authorities similar as for civil aviation. However, compared to civil aviation the objective validation testing for qualification of military flight simulation training devices is often limited or impossible due to many restrictions in the availability and access to both real aircraft and simulator data. A novel non-intrusive validation system is presented that uses a combination of a computer vision system and augmented reality as an alternative means for more rigorous manual validation testing of a flight simulation training device in case normal objective validation testing is not possible.
