In order to reduce emissions and increase aircraft efficiency, hybrid electric propulsion systems will become increasingly important for the aviation industry in the near future. Therefore EXTRA Aircraft and Siemens AG agreed to develop a flying testbed for electric propulsion systems based on the well-known EXTRA 330 LX (EA 300 LC) aircraft. This aircraft is not intended to be certified but is a demonstrator for electrically powered applications in the power class of a quarter megawatt and is used mainly for development and research flight tests. This paper includes a short summary about the development process of the EXTRA 330 LE, the system-level and ground testing, and then focus on the flight tests conducted. Some initial flight test results are presented. Furthermore a brief overview of the FH Aachen and RMIT research project on condition monitoring systems for hybrid electrical propulsion systems as well as flight tests planned for the future is given.
