CONCENTRATION AND EXTRACTION OF PHYTOSTEROLS FROM DEODORIZER DISTILLATE

Several methods of concentration and extraction of phytosterols from soybean oil deodorizer distillate were tried and compared in this study. The combination of technology, which included lipase-catalyzed esterification, fractional distillation and complexing, was found to be more efficient than other methods. The optimum technological parameter was determined by Response Surface Analysis and Center Composite Design. Under optimum conditions, the conversion rate of fatty acids after esterification was 96.38% (w/w); after fractional distillation, the recovery rate of phytosterols was 98.60% (w/w) and concentration of phytosterols in a ratio to the originally present levels (11.66% w/w) was 4.1:1. The phytosterols content of semifinished products and the phytosterols recovery rate after complexing reaction were 81.93% (w/w) and 95.16% (w/w) respectively. The highly finished products was composed of 99.96% (w/w) phytosterols with 46.63% (w/w) β-sitosterol, 25.60% (w/w) campesterol, 20.12% (w/w) stigamasterol, 7.65% (w/w) brassicasterol.
